Raise your hand if you’ve ever handed a child a screen and thought, “I hope this is somewhat educational.”
Same. We’ve all been there.
That’s exactly why Adair County Public Library created Checkers Library TV — a free children’s video series on YouTube that’s actually designed to be good for kids, while still being the kind of thing they’ll voluntarily sit down and watch.
No subscription. No login. No “ask your parents for a credit card.” Just great content, made by your local library, for the kids in your community.
So Who Is Checkers?
Checkers is the lovable library mascot at the heart of it all — and the Checkers Library TV channel is home to fun stories, crafts, learning activities, and library adventures made just for kids and families.
The channel features multiple series, including:
Reading Road Trip
The newest season on the channel, Reading Road Trip takes young viewers on an adventure episode by episode. Recent episodes have featured themes like creativity, writing, music, and more — each one a self-contained adventure that pairs perfectly with a library visit.
Episodes drop regularly, so there’s always something new to watch. A few fan favorites from the current season:
- The Extraordinary Artist — perfect for the creative kids in your life
- Hip Hop Snoozer — a fun, musical romp
- Writer’s Block — great for kids who love to write (or who might need a little inspiration)
- Cupcake Walk — just a delight, start to finish
Snoozer’s Storytime Adventures
This series brings the storytime experience right to your living room. Join Mrs. Hamilton and her curious robot sidekick Snoozer as she reads a children’s book, then invites young viewers to join in on a simple craft and sing along to a cheerful song.
Each episode is roughly 12 minutes long — a perfect length for keeping little attention spans engaged without a major time commitment. Episodes cover a great range of books, including titles like:
- The Bears Save the Bank
- My Father’s Dragon
- Atom by David Miles
- The Girl and the Cathedral by Nicholas Jeter
Every Snoozer episode also comes with a downloadable and printable craft — so if your child wants to make the activity from the episode, you can print it right from the library’s website.
How Parents Can Use Checkers Library TV
Think of Checkers Library TV less like “screen time” and more like a digital extension of the library itself. Here are a few ways families are making the most of it:
Storytime at home, on your schedule
Can’t make it to a library program in person? Snoozer’s Storytime Adventures brings that experience home. Grab the craft printout, press play, and you’ve got a hands-on storytime that works any day of the week.
Pair episodes with library visits
Watching a Reading Road Trip episode about an artist? Head to the library and grab some books on the same theme. The library’s children’s collection pairs beautifully with the series topics.
Classroom and homeschool use
Teachers and homeschool families — these videos were made with you in mind, too. The 12-minute Snoozer episodes are an ideal length for a classroom activity, and the craft printouts mean minimal prep on your end.
Summer screen time with substance
When school’s out and you’re looking for something purposeful to fill the afternoons, Checkers Library TV is a ready-made resource. Pair it with ACPL’s summer reading program for double the fun.
Watch Free, Anytime
All Checkers Library TV content is available for free on YouTube — no account or subscription required to watch. Just search Checkers Library TV or head to the library’s website for direct links to the playlists.
New episodes are added throughout the year, so it’s worth subscribing to the YouTube channel so your family never misses a new adventure.
