Summer 2026 — Adair County Public Library

Unearth a Story

Grab your explorer hat and dust off your reading log — Summer Reading 2026 is here! Dig into adventure, discover amazing books, and unearth stories waiting to be told. The fun begins June 2nd!

Read. Explore. Discover.

The Summer Reading Program is the library’s biggest event of the year — and it’s completely free! Each summer, readers of all ages are invited to join us for weekly programs, hands-on activities, reading challenges, and prizes.

This year’s theme, Unearth a Story, takes us on a prehistoric adventure through the world of dinosaurs, fossils, and ancient history. Whether you’re a beginning reader or a seasoned bookworm, there’s something here for you to discover.

Programs run every Tuesday at 10:00 AM CST at the library, beginning June 2nd through July 14th. Registration takes place on opening day — no advance sign-up needed, just show up and join the fun!

Why Summer Reading is Important

  • Stop the Summer Slide! Research shows children can lose up to two months of reading skills over summer break. Reading just 15–20 minutes a day keeps those skills sharp!
  • Build Confidence Regular reading helps children and teens build vocabulary, comprehension, and the confidence to tackle bigger books and ideas.
  • Spark Curiosity Every book opens a door to a new world — whether it's dinosaurs, distant galaxies, or your own backyard.
  • Make Memories Our weekly programs aren't just educational — they're fun, hands-on, and a great way to connect with friends and the community.
  • It's Free! Everything about the Summer Reading Program — the books, the programs, the prizes — is completely free with your library card.
